Mouse Math – How Fast Do Mice Multiply?

To some, mice might seem harmless, maybe even cute. But these little critters can wreak havoc on your home or business.

A mouse infestation is much like signing a lease with the worst possible roommate in the world. At first you don’t see much of them, but then they start eating and contaminating your food, damaging your furniture, and relieving themselves everywhere. One day when you’re not home they invite their significant other over. The mood is set when they find your Sinatra record collection and BOOM! You have a full-blown infestation of bad roommates.  ?

When the Mood Is Right

Mice have a gestating period of 19 – 21 days. A mouse can get pregnant immediately after giving birth and can reproduce anywhere from 5 – 10 times per year! Because they can get pregnant so quickly, it isn’t uncommon to see litters only 25 days apart.

Ok, You Two Need to Get a Room…Or a Small Village

A pregnant mouse can give birth to as many as 14 pups. Because of their ability to become pregnant so quickly, just one female mouse can give birth to as many as 56 pups per year. And here’s worst news: A baby female mouse can give birth at 6 weeks and produce as many as 10 litters in their first year.

Theoretically speaking, two mice can give birth to as many as 60 pups per year. Let’s be conservative and say that only 21 of the 60 pups are female. With the females of each litter giving birth 6 weeks after their own arrival, you could see as many as 5,082 mice in one year!
